GTO
The word GTO comes from the Italian language phrase "Gran Turismo Omologato." In English, that translates to "Grand Touring Homolagated." What it really means is, the creation of a car put together from parts all made by the same manufacturer, but originally designed for different models. Simplifying even further, it means that Pontiac took an engine (389ci V-8) and stuffed it into their intermediate sized car (Tempest/LeMans) and created still another car, aptly called GTO!
